The Ministry of Health of Cuba announced on Wednesday, 8, the first detected case of the Ômicron variant of Covid-19. The strain was found in a medical collaborator who arrived on the island from Mozambique on 27 November. The health professional arrived in the country without symptoms and went to the province of Pinar del Río, with fever and sore throat a day later. He did a test that confirmed the virus infection and days later had the presence of the variant detected in a sequencing test. According to the Our World In Data platform, from the beginning of the pandemic until now, the island has registered 963,000 positive cases of the disease and 8,300 deaths. To contain the variant, the country announced on 29 November that it would apply mandatory quarantine to travelers from eight African countries from 4 December. The measure requires everyone to hand in a PCR test done within 72 hours before boarding and to take a new test when disembarking.
