Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi and Presidency Secretary Alejandro Sánchez were two of those who carried the coffin from Mujica to the Lost Steps Hall; Lula confirmed presence
The coffin of former Uruguayan president José Pepe Mujica arrived around 1:15 pm on Wednesday (local time, the same from Brasilia) to the Montevideo Legislative Palace, where he will be veiled at the Steps Hall lost for at least 24 hours. After traveling much of the center of the Uruguay capital, a six-horsepower carriage arrived at the headquarters of the Legislature, where they awaited the Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, vice president, Carolina Cosse, and other authorities.
Orsi and the presidency secretary, Alejandro Sánchez, were two of those who carried the coffin from Mujica to the Lost Steps Hall, where he is veiled this afternoon in a ceremony open to the public. One of those present will be the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvawho was a next friend of Mujic. The ceremony is expected to last at least 24 hours, but may change.
Accompanied by thousands of people, the funeral procession departed this Wednesday of the executive tower in Montevideo, towards the Legislative Palace. Minutes later, amid applause, the funeral procession set out towards 18 de Julio Avenue in Montevideo – the capital’s main avenue – where it goes towards the headquarters of the Tupamaros National Liberation Movement.

In front of the funeral procession, hundreds of militants from the popular participation movement, a historic front sector created by the former president, marched with black flags and dressed in black with a T-shirt with the inscription on the back: “I’m not leaving, I’m coming.” This phrase was delivered by Mujica on March 1, 2015, when he left the country’s presidency after five years.
After stopping in front of the headquarters of the Tupamaros National Liberation Movement, the funeral procession continued its trajectory and also headed to the headquarters of the Popular Participation and Front Movement, both located in the center of Montevideo. Pepe Mujica died yesterday in Montevideo at 89, a year after the discovery of a malignant tumor in the esophagus and a week before turning 90.
“It is in deep pain that we announce the death of our partner Pepe Mujica. President, militant, reference and driver. We will miss you, old dear. Thank you for everything you gave us and your deep love for your people,” he announced in his account on social network X President Orsi.
On April 29 last year, Mujica announced at a news conference that he had a tumor in his esophagus. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that it was evil and needed to be treated with radiotherapy, which was referred to Montevideo. In January of this year, Mujica told an interview with Uruguay magazine “Prame” that cancer discovered in his esophagus spread to the liver.
