This year, Germany launches a new program of a voluntary set of military personnel to restore the not enough army of the country. But if too few people voluntarily join the army, Germany can return the mandatory call.
This was declared by the German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius in his first parliamentary appeal to the new federal government. It is quoted by politico.
“We agreed that we will first rely on volunteering – a service that is voluntary and seeks to encourage young people to serve our country. And I say this rather consciously and honestly: the emphasis is also on the “first”, in case we cannot hire enough volunteers, ”the Minister of Defense said.
Pistorius said that in Budeswehr there are about 181,500 military personnel in the actual service, that by 2031 there are much less than planned, the number of 203,000 soldiers.
According to him, despite the fact that at the beginning of 2025, the army set increased by 20%, it is not enough.
“We still have too few people to make our armed forces,” Pistorius said.
The new coalition government supports the campaign from the recruitment of military personnel. Chancellor Friedrich Merz during an appeal to the Bundestag on May 14 promised to create a “strongest army in Europe” in Germany.
Pistorius emphasized that Germany will lead to security with France, Great Britain and Poland.
“Security in Europe, first of all, is the responsibility of the Europeans themselves,” the minister said.
Germany suspended mandatory military service in 2011. Its restoration will marked a significant turn in politics, caused by an increase in the threat from Russia in combination with an increase in concern about the reliability of US security guarantees for President Donald Trump.
