The Argentine government dissolved on Tuesday (20) a commission responsible for investigating the alleged fraud scheme with the cryptocurrency $ Libra, promoted by the President Javier Milei shortly before generating millionaire losses. The commission had been created in February at the initiative of the Executive Power itself, when the scandal burst after Milei promoted the launch of $ Libra on its social networks.

Cryptocurrency, which was valued at $ 0.01 ($ 0.057 in the current price), was negotiated at about $ 5 ($ 28) after the president’s message, and collapsed after generalized sales hours later. The suspicion is that some investors may have had privileged information to settle their stakes in $ Pound before the virtual currency fall.

According to the decree published in the Official Gazette on Tuesday, the government eliminated the investigative committee “for having fulfilled the task commissioned to it.” This assignment included the collection of reports of the National Value Commission, the Central Bank and other official agencies and offices to be sent to the Fiscal Public Prosecution Service.

The dissolved committee was chaired by the head of advisers of the Ministry of Justice and operated within the executive, which caused controversy as the president was involved in the case. “I have nothing to hide … I did not promote, I widespread,” Milei told the press in order to elucidate his responsibilities. He added that “he was not aware of the project details” of cryptocurrency.

The case triggered a judicial complaint and is also being investigated by the court of United States. As part of the complaint, Judge María Servini ordered last week for the Central Bank to provide information on the operations carried out by the president and his sister, the presidential secretary Karina Milei. It also requested reports on banking and stock market for entrepreneurs linked to cryptocurrency.

The Congress formed a parliamentary committee investigating and summoned the chief of staff, Guillermo Franco, to explain the case. Franks, who answered the legislators’ questions on April 29, denied that the case was a fraud and asked to wait for the judicial investigation.
