US Judge orders the release of pro-Palestinian protest leader detained for more than three months

This Friday (20), a federal judge of United States He ordered the immediate liberation of Mahmoud Khalil, one of the leaders of pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University. Khalil had been detained for more than three months, without formal accusations against him. Mahmoud Khalil is a Palestinian born in Syria, married to an American citizen with a cool residence in the US. He was the only protester pro-Palestin who remained trapped amid Donald Trump’s actions to contain what he classified as “anti -Semitism” in universities. During his detention, he first became a father.

Judge Michael Farbiarz, at a hearing held in a New Jersey court, determined that Khalil should be released today. Although the Trump government, through the Secretary of State Marco Rubiohe claimed that Khalil’s activities put US interests at risk, Judge Farbiarz considered that these allegations do not justify the arrest, classifying it as “very, very unusual.”

On June 11, the same judge had already decided that Khalil could not be arrested or expelled on the basis of these accusations, establishing a deadline for his release. However, the government had refused to comply with the order, alleging irregularities in the Palestinian residence permission request. A meeting is foreseen between the parties to define Khalil’s “liberation conditions”, which must deliver his passport and other travel documents.
