The Peru Mountain Guides Association (AGMP) confirmed on Sunday (22) the location of the bodies of Brazilian photographer Edson Vandeira, 36, and the Peruvian mountaineers Efraín Pretel Alonzo, 34, and Jesús Manuel Picó Huerta, 31. The three had been missing since May 29, after an expedition to the Nevado Artesonra, more than 6,000 meters altitude. Located in Blanca, inside Huascarán National Park, one of the most challenging areas of the Andes.

The group was part of the High Mountain Studies Center (CEAM) and independently performed a technical route to the mountain summit. They should have returned on June 1, but they lost contact with family and colleagues shortly after the beginning of the climbing. The first evidence indicates that the trio may have reached the summit, but facing difficulties in the descent, which requires four technical rapes. A group tent was found empty by high mountain police.

AGMP requested support from the Ministry of Defense of Peru and the National Police to rescue the bodies, including the sending of a helicopter and rescuers, due to the difficulty of access to the region.

Edson Vandeira was a photographer specializing in adventure and nature, with works published by National Geographic and by History Channel. In 2021, he was the finalist of the competition Wildlife photography of the Year with a series about the fires in the Pantanal. He participated in nine expeditions to Antarctica and was aspiring the Guide to the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (UIAGM/IFMGA).

During the disappearance, family members of Edson and his companions asked for support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil and Peruvian authorities to intensify the search. The mobilization was supported by mountaineering entities and friends of the trio, who organized campaigns to raise funds and enable the ransom. Peruvian authorities still work in the bodies removal operation.
