The apostolic palace where he is hosted was often used by his predecessors, except Francisco, who never left Santa Marta’s residence in the Vatican
THE Pope Leo XIV This Sunday (6) arrived Castel Gandolfo, the Summer Residence of Popes, where he will spend two weeks of rest. The pontiff was received by a crowd of onlookers and faithful on his arrival in this small town, which is 20 kilometers southeast of Rome. The apostolic palace where he will rest was often used by his predecessors, except Francisco, who never left Santa Marta’s residence at the Vatican, where he spent the summer holidays during the 12 years of his pontificate.

The palace was built in the seventeenth century and served as a summer residence of the popes until 1870 and the fall of the pontificable state. Since the 1929 Later Treaty, between the Italian state and the Holy See, the property has become the property of the Catholic Church again.
