The president of the United States spared no criticism of the conduct of lawsuits in Brazil and classified the actions against Bolsonaro as a ‘hunting of witches’; Taxation comes into force on August 1
The former president of the United States, Donald Trumpannounced the imposition of a 50% rate on all Brazilian products exported to the US country, starting to August 1, 2025. The measure was officially communicated in a letter sent to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, released on Wednesday (9), and represents a direct retaliation for the alleged attacks of Brazil to freedom of expression and treatment given to former President Jair Bolsonaro.
In the letter addressed to the Planalto Palace, Trump spared no criticism of the conduct of court proceedings in Brazil. He classified the actions against Bolsonaro as a “witch hunt” which, he said, “must be closed immediately.” “The way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro-a highly respected leader worldwide during his term, including the United States-is an international misfortune,” Trump wrote.
Criticism of the STF and digital censorship
The Republican also fired against the Federal Supreme Court (STF), accusing the Brazilian Court of issuing “secrets and illegal censorship orders” against US social networking platforms. According to Trump, these decisions violate the principles of freedom of expression and justify trade protection measures.
“Due to Brazil’s insidious attacks against free elections and the rights fundamental to the freedom of expression of Americans (…), we will charge a 50% tariff over any Brazilian product sent to the United States,” the text says. Trump also warned that products redirected by other countries to circumvent the tariff will also be subject to surcharge.

Business Relations under pressure
The president of the United States stated that trade relations with Brazil are “very unfair” and blamed tariff policies and Brazilian commercial barriers for imbalances in the trade scale. He argues that the tariff imposed is “much inferior to what would be needed” to restore parity between countries.
“Our relationship has been, unfortunately, very far from reciprocity (…). The 50% rate is much lower than necessary for equal commercial conditions,” says Trump.
Investigation and threats of sanctions
Trump also ordered the United States Commerce Representative, Jamieson Greer, to begin investigation under section 301 of the American commercial legislation, with the aim of ascertaining unfair practices attributed to Brazil, especially with regard to digital commerce. In addition, he made it clear that any increase in tariffs from Brazil will result in additional retaliation by the US.
“If for any reason Brazil decides to increase its rates, then any amount that Brazil applies will be added to the 50% we will charge,” he warned.
Possibility of negotiation
Despite his hard tone, Trump left an opening for dialogue and a possible reduction of the fare, since Brazil promotes a commercial opening and elimination of barriers. “These rates can be modified – up or down – depending on our relationship with your country. You will never be disappointed with the United States of America,” the Republican concluded.
The letter intensifies the diplomatic tension between the two countries in a moment of growing geopolitical instability and electoral polarization in the United States. So far, the Brazilian government has not officially commented on the content of the message or the possible consequences of the new tariff measure.
