About 800 people died in Gaza Trying to get humanitarian aid since late May, the UN reported on Friday, while Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahureaffirmed that he expects to obtain a truce agreement in “a few days.” “We are talking about almost 800 people dead while trying to get help,” said Ravina Shamdasani. “Most of the injuries were caused by bullets,” said UN High Commissioner’s spokesman Ravina Shamdasani for Human Rights. Almost all of the deaths occurred near posts of the Humanitarian Foundation of Gaza (GHF), supported by United States and Israelwhich began distributing food in late May after a blockade of more than two months imposed by Israel.

Between May 27, the beginning of the Foundation’s operations, and July 7, “we recorded 798 dead, of which 615 near GHF facilities,” said Shamdasani. GHF distributions led to chaotic scenes, and the Israeli army opened fire several times in an attempt to contain the flow of palestinians desperate for help. Asked about the numbers, the army said he worked to minimize “possible frictions” between these civilians and the soldiers, and that he performed “exhaustive analysis” of the incidents.

“Instructions were given to the forces on the ground from the lessons learned,” he added in a statement. The UN and the main humanitarian organizations refuse to work with GHF, claiming that the organization serves Israeli military objectives and violates basic humanitarian principles.

“Negotiate an end”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hopes to reach a truce agreement with the terrorist group Hamas “in a few days”, while negotiations through foreign mediators continue for the sixth consecutive day in Doha. “There will probably be a 60-day ceasefire. We will remove the first group (hostage) and then use this 60-day ceasefire to negotiate the end of all this,” the Premier said in an interview with the American Channel Newsmax.

The Israeli leader said on Thursday he was willing to negotiate a permanent truce in Gaza as long as Hamas demilitarizes the area and leaves the government of the territory. Hamas, in turn, requires Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, “guarantees” regarding the permanent nature of the ceasefire and the return of the UN and international organizations recognized to humanitarian aid management. The war was triggered by an unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023, in southern Israel, by the Palestinian Islamist movement. In response, Israel launched an offensive against Hamas, taking vast areas of Palestinian territory.

The October 2023 attack left 1,219 dead in Israel, mostly civilians, according to a country -based count. Of the 251 people kidnapped during the attack, 49 follow captive in Gaza, 27 of them were declared killed by the Israeli army. In the Gaza Strip, at least 57,762 Palestinians, mostly civilians, died in the military campaign of reprisal launched by Israel, according to data from the Ministry of Health of the Hamas Government, considered reliable by the UN.

“Extremely difficult situation”

The Israeli army attacked several points in the Gaza Strip on Friday, leaving at least 30 dead, the local Civil Defense said. According to Mohamad Al Mughayir, responsible for the organization, ten people died after being shot while waiting to receive humanitarian aid near Rafah, in southern Gaza. Due to the restrictions imposed on the press in Gaza and the difficulties of access on the ground, AFP is unable to verify the allegations of the different parties independently.
