BMW introduced a new generation of 5-Series

The German company BMW has introduced a new generation of the popular family of sedans and station wagons 5-Series. The novelty will be available with traditional internal combustion engines and in a top-end electric version.

The current 8th generation of the model received the most important innovation in its 51-year history of existence – for the first time it will be available not only with the usual internal combustion engines, but also in an all-electric version.

The electric version of the i5 and the ICE 5-Series models will be brought to market at the same time, since both options share a common base and are unified as much as possible to reduce costs. The model is built on the latest BMW CLAR platform, which will also receive a future novelty – the new generation of Neue Klasse.

The length of the sedan has grown by 86 mm to 5060 mm, and the wheelbase has been increased by 20 mm to 2995 mm. The appearance of the model has become more elegant and respectful than the 3-Series, as well as more dynamic and sporty than the 7-Series. A distinctive feature of the novelty is the door handles hidden in the body and the aggressive design of the front bumper with large air intakes in black glossy salaries. The electric version of the i5 is distinguished by its aero patterned rim design, different logos and a different grille. As an option, LED illumination of the “nostrils” is offered.

The BMW 5 Series received a new digital instrument cluster and an improved infotainment system. The instrument scale has a diagonal of 12.3 inches, and the multimedia screen for the first time received a diagonal of 14.9 inches. The management of all systems is entrusted to the iDrive 8.5 operating system.

The ICE lineup will have a mild hybrid system, while the PHEV plug-in hybrid will join the lineup in 2024. Models 530i and 530i xDrive will be equipped with a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with 258 hp. It will allow the novelty to accelerate to the first hundred in 5.8 s. The 540i and 540i xDrive 3-litre straight-six variants produce 380 and 421 hp, respectively. This will allow you to pick up speed from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds.

For the first time, buyers will be offered two electric versions of the i5 – rear-wheel drive with a single electric motor eDrive 40 and all-wheel drive xDrive M60 with two electric motors. The first has a return of 340 hp. and 400 Nm, and acceleration to “hundreds” takes 5.7 s. The top M60 has a total power of 598 hp, and the maximum torque reaches 795 Nm. With such an arsenal, it takes only 3.7 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km / h. The 84.3 kWh battery can be charged by devices ranging from 11 kW to 205 kW. In the latter case, it takes half an hour to replenish the battery energy from 10 to 80%. The BMW i5 eDrive 40 is capable of traveling up to 475 km on a single charge, while the M60 version is 412 km.

To compensate for the 25 percent increase in weight compared to cars with internal combustion engines, the electric car received a rear air suspension and adaptive dampers to increase comfort on bad roads. And to increase maneuverability, the rear wheels have a control system.

The base version of the BMW 530i will cost $57,900, which is $1,900 on the road of its predecessor in a similar performance. But the all-wheel drive 540i xDrive is $300 cheaper than its predecessor. The electric version of the i5 eDrive40 starts at $66,800, while the top-of-the-line i5 M60 xDrive will cost $84,100.
