Drivers throughout the USSR, with the same feeling, spoke only one word – “Foreign car”. The products of the internal automobile industry left much to be desired, so almost every motorist dreamed that an imported car appeared in his garage.
However, some models were especially loved among Soviet drivers. OBOZ.UA talks about these dream cars. Sometimes they could be found on the roads of the USSR. These cars were envious.
Mercedes-Benz W123
This model was a symbol of prestige. Usually this reached the USSR through diplomats or foreign missions. From the point of view of solidity and comfort, the car was equated with “members of members” – luxurious cars to which members of the Council of the Communist Party of the Trade Union moved. Famous artists, chief doctors of central hospitals and other “collected” citizens can be directed on such a foreign car.
Volvo 240
The Swedish car was appreciated for reliability and simplicity. Moreover, this proved itself even in northern conditions. Professors, leading engineers and diplomats can afford such a car.
Ford Taunus/Ford Granada
These American cars were delivered to the USSR through European social camps – Poland, Eastern Germany, sometimes even Finland. Separately valuable models with an automatic gearbox. Ford loved a soft salon and magnificent chrome details.
Citroën CX/DS
This beauty has always been visible from afar thanks to its futuristic design. There were very few cars in the USSR, so they always attracted increased attention. They were imported through a familiar French. And at the wheel you can see diplomats or famous artists.
Toyota Crown/Mark II
Japanese cars with the right steering wheel began to enter the USSR in the late 1980s. They were imported through Vladivostok. Toyota was especially passionate. Although in fact it is a reliable car for daily work, they gave the impression of luxurious cars in the USSR. They were struck by all electric drives, air conditioners, an automatic box, soft seats.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA told why Soviet citizens prefer railway trips.
