“Scholzing”: The True Story of a Controversial Term

In a moment of great frustration at Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s reluctance to finally authorize the delivery of German-made European Leopard tanks to Ukraine, a Ukrainian friend WhatsApped me a satirical mockup about “Scholzing” in mid-January. Alongside a photograph of the Chancellor, it defined the dictionary-style recoining as a “verb: to communicate good intentions, only to then use/find/invent every conceivable reason to delay and/or prevent them”. I found this perceptive and amusing, quickly retweeted it and didn’t think twice about it. My account was buzzing, but I had written a lot about Ukraine myself.
