EU demands to abolish visa-free travel for Ukraine – media

The abolition of visa-free travel was discussed in Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and the Czech Republic – in particular, the latter is unhappy with Ukraine’s violations

Several EU member states raised the issue of the possibility of canceling the visa-free regime for Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and the Western Balkans.

Radio Liberty writes about this, which has at its disposal an internal EU document.

The EU document is dated September 27, and was released during the visit of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in the Western Balkans.

As the media writes, this the decision was made due to the fact that the mentioned countries are breaking the rules. In particular, people use the visa-free regime to illegally reside in the EU and to submit frivolous asylum applications.

Which countries are complaining about?

They started talking about the abolition of visa-free travel for Ukraine in Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and the Czech Republic:

  • the number of applications for asylum for Georgian citizens has increased by more than 50% over the past three months;
  • Germany referred to Moldova as a special case, when from June to August 2019 and from June to August of this year, the increase in denials of readmission of persons was 429%.
  • France pointed to problems due to the citizens of Albania, Georgia and Serbia.
  • Belgium complains about Moldova;
  • Czech Republic – to Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
