(ANSA) – BARI, MAY 13 – A 24-meter yacht that was sailing in the lower Adriatic towards Montenegro went up in flames and sank last night 5 miles off the coast of Santa Maria di Leuca. The three crew members, the commander and two sailors, all Slovenians, once they realized that the flames on board were not manageable, they went to safety on a life raft and called for help.
The fire brigade of the Lecce Command intervened on the spot with a pump motorboat from the Taranto Command and a patrol boat from the Harbor Master’s Office that rescued the crew. Despite the extinguishing attempts that lasted until this morning, the fire caused the boat to sink. The three people recovered were not injured. The yacht flies the flag of the Jersey Islands.
