Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni agree not to discriminate or tax digital services and technology companies

The president of the United States, Donald Trumpand the Prime Minister of Italy, GIORGIA MELONIhave agreed that a “non-discriminatory environment in terms of digital service taxation is necessary to allow investments of state-of-the-art technology companies,” according to a statement issued by the White House on Friday morning (18).

“The US and Italy recognize the need to protect our critical and sensitive national infrastructure and technology, which is why we commit to using only reliable salespeople in these networks and there will be no discrimination between American or Italian sellers,” the governments said in the note.

The apparent agreement between the two nations about saving technology companies occurs at a time of commercial negotiations between the US and the European Union (EU) to reach reducing tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. One of the measures aimed at the block was the taxation of digital services, which could reach Big Techs as a goal, Alphabet – Google controller – and Microsoft

Previously, European and American authorities stated that negotiations would be exclusively between the country and the economic bloc, without individual agreements between the US and member countries

Trump and Meloni gathered on Thursday to discuss strategic cooperation between US and Italy in various areas. In a statement, the White House confirmed that the US president has agreed to visit Italy soon and also considers a USA-European meeting. “The United States and Italy agree to work to ensure that trade between the United States and Europe is mutually beneficial, fair and reciprocal,” the statement said.
